Jesus Christ’s one time sacrifice: Is it enough to save?

In Hebrews 10:12, we are told, “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.” Single. One sacrifice. And what does this sacrifice accomplish? Hebrews 10:14 says, “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”

This sacrifice makes people perfect in the sight of God; through their faith in what Jesus has done in bearing our sins on the cross. Jesus’s righteousness and sinless life is credited to our account. It has nothing to do with anything good or bad we have ever done; it is all about what Jesus has done and our faith in him.

Back to the beginning of it all, in Genesis 15:6, “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” Abram’s (Abraham) faith in God’s promises is what made God see him as righteous, not Abraham’s good deeds.

If the sacrifice you are relying on can be received over and over again at church, and yet never perfects you in the sight of God, then it’s not the sacrifice Jesus made. This is very serious. In the bible there were a group of people called the Bereans. As they were told various information, it’s recorded that they, “…. received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”

Don’t rely on your church to tell you what’s true. Don’t depend on your pastor. Don’t assume everything you learned as a child is truth. Instead, be like the Bereans and search the word of God. We are even more blessed than they, as we have both the old and new testament scriptures. Are you sure that what you believe is the truth? Are you willing to stake your eternity, and possibly the eternity of your children, on what somebody else told you?

So many people claim to be Christian. Maybe you were sprinkled with water as a baby, or you like the music and fellowship at your local church. Maybe you like the moral rules and the lists of how to live. You may be self righteous, and like the Pharisees (religious elite) declare that you are so glad to not be like those detestable tax collectors (sinners). You may call yourself a Christian but not believe the Bible is the word of God. This position I can never understand because the entire concept and information of Jesus and angels and Heaven is only found in the Bible. Some is true but not all? What if you are wrong about which parts are true? Or you may view Jesus as a get-out-of-jail free card; say a prayer once and then live like a devil the rest of your life. But what is in your heart? What do you think about God? More importantly, what does God think about you?

Back to the book of Hebrews, what is the RESULT of this sacrifice, besides perfecting those who believe for all time? We read on, in Hebrews 10:15-18 “And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.”

Jesus’s one time sacrifice on the cross was, and is, and will always be enough for all who believe in him by faith and recognize him as their majestic and beautiful Lord and Savior. The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:1-2, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” To be in Christ Jesus is to be seen by God as Christ is, holy and blameless. We don’t need any other mediator besides Jesus between us and God the Father; not Mary, not the apostles, not other men and women of God throughout the ages. Charles Wesley, a Christian from the 1700’s said,

“God buries His workmen but carries on His work.”

It’s all God. It’s all the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, graciously working through broken and fallible men and women since the dawn of time. If you are in Christ Jesus, your sins are forgiven. If you are not in Christ Jesus, no amount of external works will ever make you right with God. What sacrifice are you relying on? Your own? One you receive in a building that never perfects anyone? Or are you relying on the perfect, one time sacrifice Jesus Christ made; spilling his own holy blood on that Roman cross to cleanse you of your sins?

Be a Berean. Search the scriptures. See if what you’ve been taught is true. And if it’s not? Fall on your knees before the Lord and humbly ask Him to forgive you for your sins. Repentance is a change of mind and is a work of the Holy Spirit where he gives you new wants and new desires; a hunger and thirst for righteousness and a hatred of the sin in your life. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, good or bad. None of it is good enough to get you into Heaven, and likewise, none of it is bad enough to keep you out of Heaven. It’s always been about Jesus.
